Elysian Log #5 - Archive, Cells and Swamp
It's this time of the month again - time for another Elysian Log, yay! Development is going absolutely flawless at the moment and we managed to get lots of new supporters. So let's look at what we implemented this month!
Milestone: Improved Elysian Archive
The Elysian Archive, the place where all creations are stored, has seen some massive improvements for the 0.1.2 demo. You can now filter by creation type (microbes, creatures etc.) and if you click a creation card, an interactive preview of it will open! It will display the same model that will be used ingame, including basic animations. The model for 3D creations will rotate and you can also make it jiggle by clicking on it. In future versions, you will also be able to rotate it manually by holding right click.
Loading and saving creations is easier than ever now. You can edit existing creations by clicking a button on the preview, which will open the corresponding editor. If you are already inside the editor, this will instantly switch the creation. You can easily save new creations with a single button press in the editor. It will also warn you, if you are about to cancel the creation, so you don't accidentally lose progress. We've planned even more improvements to the archive for the upcoming 0.1.3 update!
Milestone: Lots of New Cell Parts
We've added 7 new cell parts to the editor and planned to add at least 10 more. This includes a new type of eyes, 2 combat parts: spikes and spitters, 2 movement parts: the early fin and jet, aswell as 2 organelles: the vacuole and the mitochondrion - THE POWERHOUSE OF THE CELL - AHHHH!! Additionally locked parts, or ones that aren't implemented yet, will now be shown as a lock icon. We also added a compass, shown in the top left of the editor, so you can always see in what direction your creature is facing.
Milestone: The Swamp Biome
At the beginning of the month we've let you vote what biome is going to be added next: Beach, Desert or the Swamp, which won with an overwhelming majority of votes, so here it is! It's still missing a lot of things: 3D grass and flowers, smoother textures for the mushrooms, aswell as a better transition between trees, water and ground.
But it already looks pretty good and will only get better as the development progresses. There are way more biomes on the way, which you'll also get to vote on. We also worked on cell biomes, but those are pretty boring at the moment, since the only difference is the water color right now, but they'll certainly start to thrive (hehe) once they are filled with cells.
What's coming next for Elysian Eclipse
For the next month of development we want to focus on the following:
- Premade creations and small improvements for the Elysian Archive
- New body structure materials, including metallic skin and basic fur
- An experimental system for legs (no bone customization or animations yet)
- ...And of course the prototype that was voted for: The nest editor! It will allow you to design your species' nests, to either serve as a home for your pack, like in Spore, or just a place to rest in, if you are a lone hunter. More about this will be revealed in the coming weeks!
