Elysian Log #2 - The Rise of Blorb

Hello everyone and welcome to the second Elysian Log! It has been two months since the project started and we've come a far way in that time. Let's go through all milestones we were able to reach this month, one by one.

Milestone: The 3D Creature Creator

Since we finished most of the functionality for the 2D cell creator, the logical next step was to take this mechanic to the third dimension. The creature creator allows you to place body structure parts on a two dimensional plane, letting you form the basis of your creature. This works similar to the "spine" you have in Spore, but allows you to make any shape you want, as long as it fits in the creator. After that you can place parts on the body, making use of all three dimensions to bring your creature to life.

We didn't add any new parts though, so our test creation had to be made entrely of the existing cell parts, resulting in Blorb. Apparently everyone liked Blorb so much, that he is now a meme and has his own religion.

Blorb is love. Blorb is life.

Milestone: Procedurally Animated Body Parts (+ Cell Stage Improvements)

In the previous preview our cells were pretty stiff and just magically slided through the primordial soup. Now they can have Flagella and Cilia, which are used to propel the cell through fluids. These are our first procedurally animated parts, changing their movements based on velocity and rotation of the cell.

Last month we mentioned that "Better environment for the cell stage prototype" is planned. It can't be seen in the video, but we created a system to randomly spawn groups of objects on the map, which will become relevant in next month's update.

Milestone: The Elysian Archive

All the creations you make in the game need to be stored somewhere. Our solution for that is the "Elysian Archive", a library of "Creation Cards" containing all player-made content in your game. All those cards are saved in form of a .png file on your computer, but unlike NFTs (lol, imagine paying money for a link to a badly drawn ape), these .png files serve a purpose. You can export them to your desktop and send them to your friends, who will be able to add the creation to their game by simply dragging it into their own archive.

We already tested this by sending cards through Discord. While the archive is already functional, the UI for it hasn't been finished, so things like filtering by creation type aren't possible at the moment.

What's coming next for Elysian Eclipse

For the next month of development we want to focus on the following:

  • Finishing the rest of the Elysian Archive
  • Turning the cell stage into a minimum viable product, including
    • Switching between gameplay and editor from within the game
    • Consuming particles to nourish your cell
    • Basic stats: Health, Nutrition, Energy, Attack
    • A prototype for combat
